Learning how to learn

Congratulations to everyone for the on-going work in school in relation to the environment. The Eco-Schools Programme is the world’s largest Environmental Education programmes and aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school. It is run by an eco-committee made up of pupils and staff. Its participatory approach and combination of learning and action makes it an ideal way for schools to begin improving the environments of schools and their local communities.  The internationally recognised Green Flag is the highest award given to Eco-Schools and symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity.

A big thank you to everyone who has supported our activities so far this year.

We were delighted to hear that our Eco-Schools Green flag was renewed on 6th December 2018.  The assessors who visited the school were very impressed with our school's work.  They made the following comments about the strengths of the school:

"The Eco-Schools programme is strongly integrated into the curriculum right through P.1 - P.7.   Well integrated into daily school life.  The pupils enthusiasm and knowledge of subject matter was very good.  There is a wide range of on-going activities.  Excellent record keeping and monitoring of activities." 

 

 

Fivemiletown Primary School Principal, Melanie Houston said the pupils on the eco-committee drive the programme forward within the school. She added that it is very encouraging to see that the children are so aware of the environment and how people can impact on it either positively or negatively.  It is important for future generations that action is taken now.  The future of the planet is in our hands and the children of Fivemiletown want to do as much as they can to make a difference.

Vice Principal and Eco Coordinator, Heather Graydon added: The children have thoroughly enjoyed working on projects that have helped develop their outdoor environment, learn about reusing and recycling waste, saving water and electricity as well as leading a healthy lifestyle. The projects carried out by the pupils are embedded within their World Around Us curricular activities.
